Yongji lies in the far south-west of Shanxi province, close to where the Yellow River turns east after flowing south along the Shanxi–Shaanxi border. On a map the city sits on a flat agricultural plain, with a regular grid of streets at its centre, the broad river floodplain to the west and the Zhongtiao Mountains rising to the south-east.
The area around Yongji was the site of ancient Puzhou, an important crossing on the Yellow River. The Stork Tower, Guanque Lou, famous from a Tang dynasty poem by Wang Zhihuan, has been rebuilt here, and the iron oxen of the Pujin ferry crossing, cast in the Tang period, were excavated nearby.
