Youssoufia lies in the Marrakesh-Safi region of Morocco, on the inland plateau between Marrakesh and the Atlantic coast. From above, the town is a compact grouping of streets on open ground, with large mining areas and spoil heaps nearby forming wide, pale shapes across the landscape.
The street plan reflects its origins as a mining town, with regular blocks and broad roads laid out in a planned pattern. A Youssoufia map poster shows the orderly layout of the town alongside the more irregular neighbourhoods that grew around it.
The town was founded in the 1930s to serve phosphate mining and was originally called Louis-Gentil. Phosphate extraction, run by the OCP group, remains central to the local economy and shapes much of the surrounding land.
