Zaafarana lies on Egypt's Red Sea coast, on the western shore of the Gulf of Suez. On a map there is very little in the way of dense streets. A long, clean coastline, the coast road running north and south and a wide desert plain rising toward the mountains inland dominate the picture.
The settlement is small and spread out, with buildings clustered near the coast and the lighthouse, and service areas along the road. The most striking feature of the area is the Zaafarana wind farm, one of the largest in Africa, whose rows of turbines and access tracks draw an orderly pattern across the plain.
Inland, a road leads west through the valleys toward the Nile. Nearby, in the mountains, is the Monastery of Saint Anthony, one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world. A Zaafarana map poster is a study in open space: sea, road and desert, with a few precise lines.
