Żabbar lies in the south-east of Malta, just inland from the Grand Harbour's fortified Three Cities. On a map it is a thick knot of irregular streets and narrow alleys, spreading out from a central parish church and square. Its edges blur into neighbouring towns, so the street pattern seems to run continuously across this part of the island.
The town is known for the Hompesch Gate, a triumphal arch built in honour of Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch, who raised Żabbar to the status of a city at the end of the eighteenth century. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces, with its large dome, stands at the heart of the old centre.
