Zakopane lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains in southern Poland, often called the country's winter capital. The town spreads across a high valley, with Gubałówka hill to the north and the Tatra ridges, including the distinctive profile of Giewont, rising to the south.
In the late nineteenth century, artists and writers settled here, and Stanisław Witkiewicz developed the Zakopane style, a type of wooden architecture based on the local highlander tradition. Today visitors walk along Krupówki street, ride the funicular up Gubałówka or the cable car up Kasprowy Wierch, and watch ski jumping at Wielka Krokiew.
