Zelenogradsk lies on the Baltic coast of the Kaliningrad region, at the point where the Curonian Spit begins its long run north-east. On a map the town is compact, with a grid of streets behind a straight seafront promenade and beach. To the east, the thin line of the spit stretches away between the sea and the Curonian Lagoon.
Before 1946 the town was known as Cranz, a popular seaside resort in East Prussia. Many older villas and a seaside promenade still shape its character, and it remains one of the region's most visited coastal towns.
