Zhouzhuang, in Kunshan in southern Jiangsu, is one of the best-known water towns of the Yangtze delta. Its old core is built along canals rather than roads. Houses back directly onto the water, lanes follow the canal banks, and stone bridges link one side to the other. The street plan is effectively a drawing of the waterways.
The town's name is usually traced to the late eleventh century, when a man named Zhou Digong donated land to a local temple. Its most recognisable landmark is the Twin Bridges, a pair of old stone bridges meeting at a right angle, which became widely known through a painting by Chen Yifei. The Shen family house is another well-known stop.
On a Zhouzhuang map poster the old town appears as a tight knot of canals and short streets, surrounded by lakes and farmland crossed by more water. It is one of those places where the blue lines on a map do most of the work, and in black and white they become the centre of the design.
