Zira lies in Firozpur District in Indian Punjab, on the flat, fertile plain between the Sutlej and the towns of the Malwa region. The land is intensively farmed, and the town serves as a local centre for the surrounding villages. Its older streets form a close, irregular core, while newer blocks spread out along the main roads.
Like many towns in this part of Punjab, Zira is closely tied to agriculture, and its grain market is an important part of the local economy during harvest seasons. Canals and irrigation channels cross the landscape nearby, and roads link the town to Firozpur, Moga and the rest of the district.
