Beverley is the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire, and it has one of the most distinctive plans of any English market town. On a map the medieval core stretches north to south. At one end is Beverley Minster, and at the other is North Bar, a brick gateway that still stands across the road. St Mary's Church and the market places lie between them.
To the west is the Westwood, a large area of open common pasture where cattle still graze and where the racecourse is laid out. On the poster it appears as a broad empty space beside the dense town. To the east, Beverley Beck, a short canalised waterway, connects the town to the River Hull.
A Beverley map poster places the old town, the common and the waterway on one sheet. The winding streets of the centre contrast with the empty green ground of the Westwood. That balance of density and openness is uncommon, and it gives the town a strong, well-proportioned shape in black and white.
