Bhopal is built around water. The Upper Lake is a broad reservoir traditionally credited to the eleventh-century king Raja Bhoj. It spreads west of the centre, and the smaller Lower Lake sits just beside it. On a map the two shapes lie side by side. The city fills the land around them and climbs onto the low hills that give the capital of Madhya Pradesh its uneven, contour-led street pattern.
North of the lakes, the old city is a close weave of lanes around markets and mosques, including the Taj-ul-Masajid, one of the largest mosques in India. To the south and east, the post-independence city opens up into numbered sectors, wide roads and government campuses laid out across the Arera and Shyamla hills. The contrast between the two halves reads clearly in black and white.

It shows the pale mass of water, the tight grain of the old quarter, the looser loops of the newer districts and the green wedge of Van Vihar on the Upper Lake shore. Old city lanes
North of the lakes, the streets narrow into a dense mesh of bazaars and courtyards grouped around the Taj-ul-Masajid. On paper this is the darkest and most detailed part of the print.

South of the water, the Arera and Shyamla hills carry planned neighbourhoods with curving roads that follow the slopes. They contrast clearly with the compact old town below.
