Cauterets fills a narrow stretch of valley in the Hautes-Pyrénées, where the Gave de Cauterets runs between steep slopes. From above the town is compact and dense, its streets packed onto the valley floor and along the river, with mountains rising close on all sides. South of town, the road continues up the valley toward the Pont d'Espagne.
The town grew as a thermal spa, and grand hotels and baths from the nineteenth century still line its streets. It is a gateway to the Pyrenees National Park. Trails lead to the Lac de Gaube below the north face of the Vignemale, and a gondola climbs to the Cirque du Lys ski area above town.

Pont d'Espagne
Upstream, the valley road ends at the Pont d'Espagne, where waterfalls meet and trails lead into the national park. It makes a clear endpoint on the map.
Lac de Gaube
This mountain lake lies beneath the Vignemale and is reached on foot from the Pont d'Espagne. On the map it is a crisp shape of water in the high ground.
