Compiègne Map Poster
Compiègne sits on the left bank of the Oise, just downstream of the point where the Aisne joins it, north-east of Paris. From above, the historic centre is a tight web of streets around the town hall and the château, while the long, straight avenues of the palace park run out toward the Forest of Compiègne, one of the largest forests in France.
Two episodes made the name widely known. Joan of Arc was captured outside the town walls in 1430, and in November 1918 the armistice ending the First World War was signed in a railway carriage in a clearing of the forest. The same clearing was used again in 1940, and the site is now marked as the Glade of the Armistice.
A Compiègne map poster works well because of the contrast between town and woodland. The river cuts a clean curve along one side, the old centre forms a dense core, and the forest's straight rides and star-shaped crossings create geometric patterns that look almost drawn by hand when the map is framed wide enough to include them.
