Esplugues de Llobregat borders Barcelona to the west, just beyond the Pedralbes district and the western end of the Avinguda Diagonal. The town climbs from lower ground toward the wooded hills of Collserola. Its streets mix steep, winding roads on the slopes with denser blocks on the flatter land, and motorways and ring roads wrap around its edges.
The town has a long ceramics tradition. The Pujol i Bausis factory produced tiles used in many modernista buildings in Barcelona, and the Can Tinturé museum is devoted to decorative tiles. Esplugues is also home to the Sant Joan de Déu children's hospital, one of the best-known paediatric centres in Spain, which occupies a large site near the Barcelona boundary.
