Galliate sits on the flat farmland east of Novara, close to where Piedmont gives way to Lombardy across the Ticino. From above, the town reads as a dense, roughly rounded centre with streets pulling outward toward neighbouring villages. Around it lies a patchwork of fields and straight irrigation channels that is typical of this corner of the Po plain.
At the heart of the old town stands the Visconti-Sforza castle, a large square fortress with corner towers that still anchors the street pattern around it. The lanes nearby are narrow and slightly irregular, while later neighbourhoods follow a looser, more rectilinear layout.
