Lorient Map Poster
Lorient sits on the south coast of Brittany, where the Scorff and Blavet rivers flow into a wide, sheltered roadstead that opens to the Atlantic. On a map the city occupies the land between the rivers, bordered by water on several sides, with docks and harbours along the shore and the citadel of Port-Louis guarding the entrance opposite.
The city was founded in 1666 as a base for the French East India Company, which gave it its name, L'Orient. During the Second World War the Germans built a large submarine base at Keroman, and the city itself was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing. Rebuilt afterwards, Lorient has a largely postwar centre and hosts the Festival Interceltique every August.
