The canal runs along the eastern side of town, following the contour of the hills. It forms a long, even line between the streets and the open countryside.

Macclesfield Map Poster & Print
Macclesfield lies in east Cheshire, where the Cheshire plain meets the western edge of the Peak District. The River Bollin runs through the town, and the old centre is on the higher ground above it. To the east, the Macclesfield Canal follows the contour of the hillside, and beyond it the land rises sharply into moorland.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Macclesfield was one of the most important centres of silk production in Britain. The mills, terraces and the town's museums still reflect that period. On the map, the tightly packed terraced streets around the centre contrast with larger suburban areas and with the open, hilly country to the east.
A Macclesfield map poster shows a town at a landscape boundary. The west side is filled with streets and the flat land of the plain. The east side breaks up into hills, with the canal drawing a clear line across the slopes. The river winds through the middle, and the railway and main roads cross the valley in long, straight strokes.

River Bollin
The river winds through the town beneath the old centre, adding a soft, irregular curve to the tightly packed streets.
Edge of the Peak
East of the town, streets give way to moorland and hills, leaving the edge of the poster open and quiet.
