Malacca faces the Strait of Malacca, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, and the city has always turned toward the water. The Melaka River curves through the historic centre on its way to the sea, and the oldest streets cluster close to its banks. Beyond them, land reclamation has pushed the coastline outward, further from the old town.
Over the centuries the port passed from the Malacca Sultanate to Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, and each left traces in the plan. St Paul's Hill rises beside the river with the ruins of a Portuguese church at its summit, and the Dutch Stadthuys stands at its foot. Across the water, narrow shophouse streets around Jonker Street run close to the river.
In 2008 the historic centre was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, jointly with George Town in Penang. Newer roads, housing estates and reclaimed districts spread along the coast and deeper into the surrounding countryside.
