The eastern ice cap reaches the Barents Sea along a line of ice cliffs that runs for well over a hundred kilometres. It is one of the longest glacier fronts in the Northern Hemisphere.

Nordaustlandet Map Poster & Print
Nordaustlandet is the second-largest island in Svalbard, lying northeast of Spitsbergen across the Hinlopen Strait. It has no roads and no permanent residents, so its map is a study in pure shape. It shows a heavy, rounded landmass edged by fjords, bays and small islands, far up in the high Arctic, where the sea is frozen for much of the year.
Two ice caps cover most of the island. Austfonna in the east is one of the largest ice caps in Europe by area, and much of its edge meets the sea as a long wall of ice cliffs. The island lies within Svalbard's protected nature reserves, and its bays are visited mostly by expedition ships in summer. Polar bears, walrus and seabird colonies are its main residents.
