The estuary front
The city's northern edge follows the wide mouth of the Río Gallegos. A long shoreline separates the regular street grid from open water and tidal flats.

Río Gallegos Map Poster & Print
Río Gallegos sits on the southern bank of the estuary that gives it its name, where the river widens before reaching the Atlantic. On a map the town is an orderly grid of blocks. It runs parallel to the shoreline and stops at wide mudflats and open water. Beyond the last streets, the Patagonian steppe stretches away almost empty, so the urban pattern stands out with unusual clarity.
The estuary has a very large tidal range. At low water, broad flats are exposed where there was sea a few hours earlier, and the coastline on a map traces that shifting boundary. As the capital of Santa Cruz province, the city is an administrative and supply centre for a vast, thinly populated region of estancias, sheep country and long roads.
A Río Gallegos map poster works through restraint. There is the rectilinear town, the long curve of the waterfront, and a great deal of blank space for the estuary and the steppe. The simplicity suits the place, a compact settlement holding its ground in a landscape shaped by wind and tide.

Steady grid
Streets run in a consistent rectangular pattern across the town. It is the classic layout of Argentine provincial cities, drawn here with little interruption from hills or rivers.
Open steppe
Around the built-up area the map empties quickly into roads and scattered tracks. That leaves generous negative space that frames the town against the Patagonian plain.
