Sevastopol lies on the southwestern tip of the Crimean peninsula, and few cities are shaped so completely by their harbour. The long Sevastopol Bay cuts deep inland from the Black Sea, and a series of smaller bays branch off it and off the open coast. One of them, the Southern Bay, reaches into the city centre. Streets run along the ridges and shorelines between these arms of water.
The historic centre sits on a hill between the Southern Bay and the main bay, with a ring of streets around it. To the west lie the remains of Chersonesus, an ancient Greek colony listed by UNESCO. The city is also closely associated with the long siege of 1854 to 1855 during the Crimean War.

Branching inlets
Smaller bays cut into the shore on both sides and create a comb-like coastline of narrow fingers of water and headlands, which gives the map its distinctive outline.
Chersonesus
West of the centre, the ancient Greek site occupies a headland by the sea. On the map it appears as an open area at the edge of the street grid.
