From above, Shūshtar sits on a low plateau with water on almost every side. The Karun River curves along its western edge, and the Gargar channel, cut by hand centuries ago, runs down the east. The old quarter fills the ground between them as a dense cluster of short lanes. Newer districts spread out across the flat Khuzestan plain around it.
The town is known for its historical hydraulic system, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a network of weirs, tunnels, canals and mill channels that has been diverting the Karun since antiquity. On a map, that engineering shows up as unusually precise lines of water set against the looser pattern of the streets. Where the channels meet the cliffs, the watermills still line the rock face.
A Shūshtar map poster reduces all of this to line and space. The two waterways enclose the old town like brackets, bridges and dams cross them at deliberate points, and the grid of the newer town fades out into farmland. The historic core sits on raised ground between two bodies of water. It shows up on the map as a compact, tightly drawn block of lanes framed by river and channel.

Old dam-bridges cross the Karun at the edge of town. They are some of the few places where the street network reaches the far bank, and they show up as sharp cross-strokes.
