River confluence
The Sokoto and Rima rivers join near the city, and their broad, seasonally green valleys form the clearest natural lines on the map beyond the urban edge.

Sokoto Map Poster & Print
Sokoto lies in the far northwest of Nigeria, close to where the Sokoto and Rima rivers meet, on flat, dry land at the southern edge of the Sahel. The city spreads widely across the plain, and on a map its street network looks loose and open, with the river valleys and their farmland forming the main natural features at the edges.
In the early nineteenth century Sokoto became the seat of the Sokoto Caliphate, founded after the movement led by Usman dan Fodio, which grew into one of the largest states in West Africa. The Sultan of Sokoto remains the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims, and the Sultan's palace and the city's central mosques mark the heart of the old town.
A Sokoto map poster brings this historic seat into a simple, clear form. The denser lanes of the old centre contrast with the broader roads of the newer districts, while the river floodplains leave open ground around the city. It is a map with a strong sense of history behind its understated lines, and it reads well in both light and dark styles.

Old city centre
The historic core around the Sultan's palace and the main mosques has a denser, more irregular pattern of streets than the planned districts that grew around it.
Open Sahel plain
Flat, dry land surrounds the city in every direction, so the street network fades gradually into fields and villages, giving the poster a calm, spacious frame.
