Sønderborg Map Poster & Print
Sønderborg sits where the Alssund, a narrow channel of the Baltic, separates the island of Als from the Jutland peninsula. Most of the old town lies on the Als side, and newer districts spread along the mainland shore. Two bridges connect the halves. On a map, the water between them reads as a clean ribbon cutting diagonally through the streets, dividing the town into two matching networks.
Sønderborg Castle, a fortified royal residence, stands by the water, and its outline is easy to pick out at the edge of the harbour. Just west of town lies Dybbøl, where the decisive battle of the 1864 war was fought. After that war the area passed to Prussia, and it returned to Denmark in 1920. That history shows on the map in the change from narrow old lanes to broad modern roads.
Beyond the centre, the map opens onto farmland, inlets and the indented coastline of Als. A university campus and new buildings along the harbour front have given the waterfront a more modern look in recent years. Two crossings link Als with Jutland, drawn as fine strokes over the water. They are the only connections that turn the two shores into a single town.

Sønderborg Castle sits at the water's edge next to the old town. Its compact footprint and surrounding grounds make a clear anchor point in the dense historic centre.
