Suzhou's old city is one of the clearest shapes in Chinese urban geography: a near-rectangle enclosed by a moat, crossed inside by a fine network of canals running parallel to the streets. From above, water and road form a double grid, a pattern that has endured for centuries and earned the city frequent comparisons with Venice.
Within and around this core are the classical gardens listed by UNESCO, including the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden, where ponds, pavilions and rockeries appear on the map as small irregular islands among the straight lines. The Grand Canal curves past the western and southern edges of the old town, linking Suzhou to the rest of the Yangtze delta.
Beyond the moat the city expands in both directions. To the east, the Suzhou Industrial Park wraps around Jinji Lake with broad avenues and modern towers, while to the west the shore of Lake Taihu brings hills and islands.
