Thessaloníki Map Poster & Print
Thessaloniki stretches along the northeastern shore of the Thermaic Gulf, and its whole shape follows the water. A continuous promenade lines the bay from the port to the eastern suburbs, with the White Tower at its hinge. Behind the seafront, the lower city is laid out in parallel streets that climb inland. The steep, winding lanes of Ano Poli rise within the remains of the Byzantine walls.
After the great fire of 1917, planner Ernest Hébrard redrew much of the centre around a monumental axis, Aristotelous Square, which opens directly onto the sea. Egnatia Street still follows the line of the Roman road across the city. A Thessaloníki map poster shows a Roman road, a Byzantine citadel and a modern plan in the same frame.
The city's early Christian and Byzantine monuments are UNESCO-listed, and the Rotunda and Arch of Galerius stand among ordinary apartment blocks. On the map they are small points inside the grid. Many former residents can still place them without looking.

Hébrard's post-fire square cuts a broad corridor from Egnatia Street down to the sea. It is the clearest planned gesture in the centre.
Ano Poli and walls
On the hillside above the centre, irregular alleys and stretches of Byzantine wall form a denser, organic pattern, very different from the ordered lower city.
