Västerås Map Poster
Västerås lies on the northern shore of Lake Mälaren, a little over a hundred kilometres west of Stockholm. The Svartån river flows south through the centre to the lake, and the old town grew along its banks. Beyond this core, the city spreads in a broad arc along the shore, with the harbour, bays and islands of Mälaren forming the southern edge of the map.
It is one of Sweden's oldest cities, with a cathedral dating from the Middle Ages and the preserved wooden houses of Kyrkbacken on the hill beside it. In the twentieth century Västerås became closely linked with the electrical engineering company ASEA, now part of ABB. Just outside the city, Anundshög is one of the largest burial mounds in Sweden.

The small hillside quarter next to the cathedral keeps an irregular pattern of narrow lanes. It is clearly finer-grained than the planned blocks of the surrounding centre.
Mälaren shoreline
To the south the city meets the lake in a series of bays, peninsulas and islands. This complex edge fills the lower part of the poster.
