Namur sits exactly where the Sambre flows into the Meuse, and from above the whole city is organised around that meeting point. A long spur of rock rises between the two rivers and carries the fortified citadel. The old town fills the flat land on the north bank of the Sambre. Across the Meuse, Jambes spreads out in looser blocks, joined to the centre by a short run of bridges.
Namur is the capital of Wallonia and home to the regional parliament and government. Its street plan, though, is still that of a medieval river town rather than an administrative capital. Narrow lanes curve between small squares, the railway runs along the northern edge of the historic core, and wider boulevards follow the line of the old fortifications. Beyond them the valley sides climb steeply and squeeze the built-up area into long strips along the water.

Fortifications have stood on the rocky promontory above the rivers for centuries. On the map its winding access roads and open plateau make a distinct zone above the dense streets below.

North of the Sambre, the historic centre is a tight mesh of short, irregular streets. The railway and a ring of boulevards, laid over the old defensive line, mark its edges.
