Aksu lies in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar Region, near the Irtysh River in the flat steppe of the country's north-east. Until 1993 it was called Yermak. On a map the town's layout follows Soviet planning: straight avenues, rows of apartment blocks in regular quarters and a clear line between where people live and where industry works.
The town's economy has long depended on large-scale industry. A major ferroalloy plant sits outside the residential area, and a large power station operates in the district as well. From above these industrial sites appear as big, rectangular blocks of their own, joined to the town by roads and rail spurs across open land.
