Alma Map Poster & Print
Alma sits at the eastern outlet of Lac Saint-Jean, the point where the lake's waters leave through two channels, the Grande Décharge and the Petite Décharge, which together become the Saguenay River. This gives the town a map shape unlike most: neighbourhoods divided by moving water, joined by bridges, with a large island held between the two outflows.
Water also explains Alma's industry. The Isle-Maligne hydroelectric station controls the Grande Décharge, and power from the region's rivers supports a large aluminium smelter on the edge of town.
