Altenburg lies in eastern Thuringia, close to the border with Saxony. It is a hilly town rather than a flat one. The castle stands on a rock outcrop above the centre, and the streets below climb, bend and branch around the uneven ground. A large pond, the Großer Teich, sits beside the town and shows as a clear open shape on the map.
For centuries Altenburg was the seat of a duchy, and the castle, market squares and residence-era buildings still anchor its layout. The town is best known as the home of Skat, the card game invented here in the early nineteenth century. Playing-card making has a long local tradition, and there is a museum devoted to it.
