Anfu is a town in eastern Gansu Province, in the hilly loess country north of the upper Wei River valley. The land here is made of deep, fine windblown soil, carved by gullies and streams into ridges and valleys, and settlements tend to follow the valley floors, where flat ground and water are easiest to reach.
On a map the town follows this terrain closely. Streets run along the valley in a narrow band, and roads leave it by tracing watercourses or climbing toward the ridges.
