Aschaffenburg lies on the Main River at the western edge of Bavaria, where the river curves past the foot of the Spessart hills. On a map, the old town sits on the right bank, above a bend in the river. Its irregular medieval lanes contrast with the more regular nineteenth-century streets around them, and bridges connect it to the districts across the water.
The city's landmark is Schloss Johannisburg, a large Renaissance palace built of red sandstone that once served as a residence of the Archbishops of Mainz. Nearby, the Pompejanum reproduces a Roman villa above the river, and Park Schönsbusch lies further out, laid out as an English landscape garden.
