Beauvais Map Poster & Print
Beauvais lies in the valley of the Thérain in the Oise department, north of Paris. The historic centre is compact and almost oval, enclosed by a loop of boulevards that trace the line of the old ramparts. From above, that ring is the clearest feature. Inside it, streets converge on the cathedral quarter, and outside it, newer districts spread up the valley slopes.
The Cathedral of Saint-Pierre has the tallest Gothic choir ever built, about 48 metres high. The nave was never completed, which gives the building its unusual, truncated shape. The town also has a long tradition of tapestry weaving through its royal manufactory. Much of the centre was rebuilt after heavy bombing in 1940.
