Bhiwandi lies in Thane district, northeast of Mumbai and close to the Thane creek and the Ulhas river system. For decades it has been known as one of India's largest centres for powerloom weaving, with thousands of small workshops producing cloth. The older town is densely built, and from above its lanes form a close, irregular web.
In recent years Bhiwandi has also become a major warehousing and logistics hub for the Mumbai region. Large distribution sheds spread across the surrounding land, and on a map they appear as big, regular rectangles very different in scale from the small plots of the old town.
