Bhupalpally is the headquarters of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district in northern Telangana, a region of forests, rivers and coal. On a map the town appears as a mix of an older settlement, planned residential colonies built for industrial workers, and roads that lead out toward mines, a power station and the surrounding villages.
Coal mining by the Singareni Collieries Company is central to the town's economy, and the Kakatiya Thermal Power Station lies nearby.
