Bingerville Map Poster & Print
Bingerville sits on raised ground above the Ébrié Lagoon, a short distance east of Abidjan. It was the capital of the French colony of Côte d'Ivoire from the early 1900s until 1934, and it takes its name from the explorer and administrator Louis-Gustave Binger. On a map, the lagoon shore forms an irregular, deeply indented edge to the south.
The older part of town has a looser, greener layout than the dense districts of Abidjan, with streets following the slope toward the water. The town's botanical garden, created in the colonial period, remains a large green area. New residential districts now spread along the roads linking Bingerville to the metropolitan area.
