Bougado lies in the municipality of Trofa, north of Porto, and its old parishes form much of the town that Trofa became. On a map the pattern is typical of the Minho-Douro countryside: roads that follow ridges and valleys, houses lining them, and small plots of farmland filling the spaces between. There is no single centre so much as a network of settled lanes.
The River Ave winds through the area, and its looping course gives the map its most memorable shape.
