Bressanone, or Brixen in German, lies in South Tyrol at the confluence of the Eisack (Isarco) and Rienz rivers. On a map, the two waterways converge just north of the historic centre, and the old town sits as a tight, walled-looking cluster of streets and squares beside them.
The town was the seat of prince-bishops for centuries, and the cathedral square, the Hofburg palace and the arcaded lanes around them give the centre its dense structure.
