Campos Gerais is in the south of Minas Gerais, one of Brazil's main coffee-growing regions. The landscape is made up of rolling hills, farms and the long, branching arms of the Furnas reservoir, which were created when a dam flooded the valleys of the Rio Grande. The municipality lies close to parts of this large artificial lake.
The town has a compact street network adapted to the terrain. Some streets follow the slopes, while others form short regular blocks around the centre.
