Casa Nova sits in northern Bahia, on the edge of the Sobradinho reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Brazil, formed by damming the São Francisco River. When the reservoir filled in the late 1970s, the original town was flooded and a new one was built on higher ground. The regular, planned layout of the present town reflects that relocation.
The municipality stretches far across the semi-arid sertão, where caatinga scrub covers most of the land. On a map, that open interior is interrupted by long, straight roads and the rectangular outlines of irrigated farms. The area is part of the São Francisco Valley wine region, where vineyards thrive in a climate few would expect to suit grapes.
