Česká Lípa lies in the Liberec Region of northern Bohemia, and the Ploučnice river winds through it in wide loops. From above, the historic centre forms a compact grid around a large rectangular square. The river bends around it, with parks along the banks. Beyond the centre, large panel housing estates built in the second half of the twentieth century spread across the surrounding ground.
The town's best-known landmark is the water castle, Vodní hrad Lipý, a medieval fortress originally surrounded by the river's waters. Česká Lípa is also linked with Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Thirty Years' War general, who founded an Augustinian monastery here. The Baroque monastery and the old square are among the town's most recognisable features.
