Chandler Map Poster & Print
Chandler lies in the south-eastern part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is laid out almost entirely on the one-mile section grid of the American West, with straight arterial roads every mile and curving subdivisions filling each square. Loop 101 and Loop 202 cut across this pattern in broad sweeps. Irrigation canals left over from the farming era run diagonally through neighbourhoods, and the Gila River Indian Community borders the city to the south-west.
The town was founded in 1912 by Dr Alexander Chandler, a veterinary surgeon who bought land here. His San Marcos hotel still faces the small historic square downtown. For much of the twentieth century Chandler was agricultural. It later grew into a technology centre, with large semiconductor campuses on its edges.
