Changtan lies in the northeastern part of Chongqing municipality, in the hilly and mountainous country of the Three Gorges region. The terrain is steep and folded, and this shapes everything on the map. The town occupies a patch of lower ground, and its streets follow the valley instead of spreading out evenly.
