Chichicastenango Map Poster & Print
Chichicastenango sits in the highlands of El Quiché, on a ridge surrounded by steep ravines and pine-covered hills. On a map the town is compact and irregular, its streets following the uneven ground and climbing toward the central plaza. Beyond the centre, lanes break apart quickly into scattered hamlets that follow the ridges.
The market held in and around the plaza on Thursdays and Sundays is one of the best known in Guatemala. On one side stands the church of Santo Tomás, whose steps are used for K’iche’ Maya ritual with incense and candles; across from it is the chapel of El Calvario. It was in Chichicastenango that the Dominican friar Francisco Ximénez recorded the text of the Popol Vuh around 1700.
