Ciudad Fernández lies in the Zona Media of San Luis Potosí, in the fertile valley of Rioverde. It sits right beside the city of Rioverde, and the two form a single urban area. From above, the boundary between them is hard to see, as street grids from both towns meet and merge across the valley floor.
The town's layout follows the classic Mexican pattern of regular blocks around a main plaza and parish church, with streets extending outwards in a steady grid.
