Cognac Map Poster & Print
Cognac lies on the Charente river in south-western France, and the river gives the town its shape. From above, the medieval centre climbs gently from the left bank, a close tangle of narrow streets around the château, while newer districts spread out on both sides. Bridges cross the Charente, and the quays and warehouses of the spirit houses line the water.
The town gave its name to the brandy distilled in the surrounding vineyards, and houses such as Hennessy, Martell and Rémy Martin are based here. The château was the birthplace of King Francis I in 1494. On many old walls you can see a dark coating, a fungus that feeds on the alcohol evaporating from the ageing barrels.
