Dastgerd is a town on the broad plateau north of Isfahan, in central Iran. The land here is flat and dry, and settlement has long relied on careful use of water. On a map the town appears as a compact patch of closely packed blocks. Around it is a flat mosaic of cultivated parcels and roads that cross the plain in long, straight lines.
Lanes inside the town are narrow and often bend, as they do in many older settlements of the Iranian plateau. Newer streets on the edges are wider and more regular. The difference is easy to see from above: an irregular core surrounded by tidier, more recent districts that follow the direction of the main roads.
