Edéa Map Poster
Edéa lies in Cameroon's Littoral region on the Sanaga, the country's longest river, on the route between Douala and Yaoundé. Here the Sanaga divides into several arms around islands and rocky rapids, and the town has grown along its banks. From above, the river is the defining shape: wide, split and irregular, with the street network fitting itself around its channels.
Those rapids made Edéa an industrial town. A hydroelectric station built on the river in the 1950s supplies power to the region, and an aluminium smelter was set up nearby to use it. The main road and railway linking Douala with Yaoundé pass through the town, crossing the Sanaga on bridges that stand out clearly on the map.
An Edéa map poster is above all a river map. The branching channels of the Sanaga, the bridges and the streets climbing away from the banks give the composition real movement, quite unlike a flat grid town. Even in pure black and white, the water gives the print a strong sense of place.

The Douala–Yaoundé road and railway cross the Sanaga here, and their bridges appear as thin, straight lines over the water.

The hydroelectric works on the rapids form a distinct cluster of structures along the river. They are the origin of the town's industrial role.
