Edmond sits just north of Oklahoma City, and its map shows the survey grid that shapes much of the American plains. Major roads run on straight section lines a mile apart, dividing the city into large squares. Inside them, residential streets curve into loops and cul-de-sacs. The older downtown around Broadway and Second Street has a tighter, more traditional pattern.
The University of Central Oklahoma is a key presence, and its campus forms a distinct block of buildings and green space near downtown. To the east lies Arcadia Lake, a reservoir with irregular wooded shorelines that breaks the rigid grid. Interstate 35 runs along the eastern side of the city.
