Engelskirchen lies in the Oberbergischer Kreis, east of Cologne, in the valley of the Agger. The map is shaped by that valley. The river once powered the town's industry. The Ermen & Engels cotton mill, linked to the family of Friedrich Engels, operated here, and the site is now part of the LVR Industrial Museum.
